Theology of Joy & the Good Life Conference & Teaching Workshop
July 31-August 3, 2018
Yale Divinity School, New Haven, CT

To mark the end of the first stage of the “Theology of Joy & the Good Life Project,” YCFC is hosting an academic conference and teaching workshop from July 31st to August 3rd. This event is open to the public (with a registration fee). For members of the Theology of Joy & the Good Life Project, registration is free and funding for travel and lodging is available.

“The Future of Joy and the Good Life” conference will include dynamic and diverse presentations of project findings from project members, presentations on future projects, and project-member-led seminars on a wide variety of research areas in relation to the theology of joy and the good life.

This will be followed by an interactive two-day teaching workshop on “Pedagogy of the Good Life,” open to professors, teachers, and pastors seeking to create nurturing learning communities that engage the fundamental questions of human existence.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Pamela Ebstyne King (Peter L. Benson Associate Professor of Applied Developmental Science, School of Psychology, Fuller Theological Seminary)

  • Willie Jennings (Associate Professor of Systematic Theology and Africana Studies, Yale Divinity School)

  • Rev. Dewey Williams (Chaplain, Central Prison, North Carolina)

  • HRH Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad (Personal Envoy and Special Advisor to H.M. King Abdullah II, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought)

  • Anthony Pinn (Agnes Cullen Arnold Professor of Humanities, founding director of the Center for Engaged Research and Collaborative Learning, Rice University)

  • Anantanand Rambachan (Professor of Religion, Philosophy and Asian Studies, Saint Olaf College)

Can I attend only the conference or only the Teaching workshop?

Yes! You are welcome to attend one or the other or both.

How much will registration cost if I am not a Project Member?

Registration for "The Future of Joy and the Good Life" conference is $150 (plus $10.41 Eventbrite fee). Registration for the "Pedagogy of the Good Life" teaching workshop is $150 (plus $10.41 fee). Registration for both is $250 (plus $15.99 fee). The registration fee includes all meals during the conference.

Is there a registration fee for Project Members?

No. Registration is free for Project Members.

What is a Project Member?

Theology of Joy & the Good Life Project Members are scholars, teachers, pastors, students, and other folks who have partnered with us in a variety of ways over the course of the project. They include our project's advisory board members, consultation participants, grant recipients, and essay and sermon contest winners. If you are uncertain whether you qualify as a project member, please email us at joy@yale.edu.

What other expenses will be covered for Project Members?

For Project Members, YCFC will cover the costs of lodging at one of our contracted hotels in New Haven for up to 3 nights for those attending either the conference or the teaching workshop and up to 5 nights for those attending the full conference and teaching workshop. Project Members may also apply for reimbursement of reasonable travel costs (economy class airfare, ground transportation, and meals during travel to and from New Haven) up to the following limits for the region in which their travel originates:

  • Northeastern United States (Boston-Washington, DC corridor): $250
  • Other US/Canada: $750
  • International: $2,500

Reimbursements will be issued after travel is completed and upon submission of appropriate receipts. Meals will be provided during the conference; accordingly, YCFC can only reimburse for meal expenses incurred during travel to and from the event, not during the event.
