Event description

Description

Freelancers are unfortunately all too familiar with waiting forever to get paid, being paid less than they are owed or worse, not being paid at all! If you’re a freelancer, independent contractor, or practitioner then it’s important that you know about the Freelance Isn’t Free Act, which protects you from these types of payment violations.

Join us on September 12th and learn the ins and outs of the law from the attorney who oversees its administration.

This course will provide an overview of the Freelance Isn't Free Act, including the law’s protections for freelance workers, what steps to take if your rights have been violated, the obligations of hiring parties, and the Office of Labor Policy and Standards’ (OLPS) procedures for administering the law. The course will also include information about the outcomes of complaints to OLPS for violations of the law and policy considerations for improving the law to better serve workers.

When:
Wednesday, September 12, 6:00 – 7:30 PM

Where:
VLA Auditorium
1 East 53rd Street, NY, NY 10022

1.5 Continuing Legal Education credits available for attorneys (Approved for Non-Transitional and Transitional Attorneys)

This class will be taught by Felice Segura, who is the Legal Services Coordinator with OLPS where she oversees the administration of the Freelance Isn’t Free Act and the Intake and Referral program. She ensures that the office is able to provide workers with information on labor and employment law and direct those workers to workplace rights resources. Prior to joining OLPS, Felice was the Senior Research Attorney with the Laborers’ Eastern Region Organizing Fund (LEROF). During her seven years at LEROF, Felice developed legislative, regulatory, and policy interventions to organize workers and raise labor standards in the construction industry in New York City, New Jersey, and Delaware.  Felice began her legal career in the Environmental Group at Venable, LLP.  She is a graduate of Fordham University School of Law and the Johns Hopkins University and is admitted to practice law in New York and New Jersey.
