Event description

Description

Resonance presents The Free University of Colour Out Of Space

When: Friday 26 April 2019, 12pm to 6pm.

Venue: Phoenix Brighton, 10-14 Waterloo Place, Brighton BN2 9NB

Cost: free!

Booking: please register via Eventbrite (here) so we can plan ahead. Or simply turn up on the day.

Bring: notebook, pen, open mind. You're not expected to do more than listen so don't be afraid that it might involve group participation, it's not a workshop. The entire day will be recorded and broadcast on Resonance FM and archived on Mixcloud so you do not even have to take notes.

Expect: a day of talks organised by Resonance FM's Ed Baxter. Ed has lectured at London College of Communication, Ravensbourne, University of Brighton, and internationally. He was a BASCA Composer of the Year in 2013. He's written for The Wire, Variant, and The Guardian. He has a PhD. And he organised the epochal Annual Festival of Experimental Music for London Musicians' Collective from 1991 to 2005. He'll be joined by a variety of guest speakers to offer a crash course in current thinking about music, sound and noise. Talks will start on the hour and each will last 50 minutes.

Timetable:

12pm: Ed Baxter: The Portable Century
The last 100+ years of sound seen through the prism of portable objects: from the acetate disc to the the mp3.
1pm: Jo Hutton: From Coolicon to Crystal Palace
The diverse sonic inventions of the influential BBC Radiophonic Workshop and how the composers used them in their work.
2pm: Julian Weaver: Future Audition: Listening in, and to, the Future
An illustrated overview of listening from pre-industrial times to contemporary AI - and a portal into the future.
3pm: Milo Thesiger-Meacham: Heat-induced Noise
The omnipresent sound of cicadas in human culture - from Plato to Sergio Leone and beyond.
4pm: Lance Dann: Riding the audio revolution
How to have a guaranteed hit independent podcast. And all the problems inherent in doing so.
5pm: Ed Baxter: The Porous Century
The last 100+ years of sound as attempts to make experience porous: from Russolo’s Art of Noises to The Colour Out Of Space.

As part of Colour Out Of Space, 26 to 28 April 2019, Brighton, UK.
