The Fourth Wall is back in Somerville after a 50-show run in Edinburgh, Scotland!

Time flies like an arrow.

Fruit flies like a banana!

The performers of The Fourth Wall don’t know what that means either, but they thought it would be an appropriately nonsensical title for a variety show that breaks all the rules of a proper musical performance.

Few musical ensembles earn top marks for their "deft choreography," (The Wall Street Journal) but this is no ordinary ensemble. Part chamber music group, part theatre company, part modern dance troupe, part circus act, the “severely talented” performers of The Fourth Wall can do it all, seamlessly blending all these elements into a new hybrid art form. This trio of musicians creates new interdisciplinary works and reinterprets classic repertoire to make music that leaps off the stage.

The Fourth Wall has spent the past decade delighting Fringe Festival audiences across North America with their one-of-a-kind variety show “Fruit Flies Like a Banana.” They perform the music of Chopin while riding hoverboards, Satie while hanging upside down, Joplin on plastic tubes, and tangos while executing precision footwork. Each act in the program is unique, performed in an order selected by the audience, resulting in a fast-paced thrill ride with surprises around every turn.

"The remarkably inventive blend of music, dance and acrobatics delivered here by Boston's The Fourth Wall is quite unlike anything else you'll find at the Fringe, and it's completely delightful."
★★★★★ CBC Manitoba
"It's part symphony, part modern dance, part game show and part comedy. It all adds up to a wholly charming entertainment."
★★★★★ Winnipeg Free Press
"Serious music by seriously talented musicians in a show that doesn’t take itself seriously at all."
★★★★★ CBC Manitoba

The Fourth Wall is a U.S. based nonprofit with a mission to create programming that engages everyone from school children to classical performance connoisseurs by radically redefining the boundaries of instrumental performance skills. Not content to sit still amidst the formality of orchestral music-making, flutist Hilary Abigana, bass trombonist C. Neil Parsons, and percussionist Greg Jukes are all conservatory-trained musicians who bring years of training in dance, theatre, and circus skills to connect their music more directly with audiences. In a theater, breaking the fourth wall brings the world on stage directly into the audience; as an ensemble, The Fourth Wall breaks the barrier between serious art and serious fun.

Please note: We are asking our audience to bring proof of vaccination or a negative test as well as be masked when not eating or drinking.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Somerville Arts Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
