Description

The Forgotten German Pioneers - Their Lives & Legacy in Michigan's Thumb
Presented by Utz Schmidt, lecturer/author

Learn about 100 families traced from Germany to Michigan's Thumb; the unbearable conditions they left behind in Germany in the 1870's, and the survival, conflicts, and hardships endured while they formed Colonie Saxonia.

Descendants narrate the stories, display/discuss their heirlooms, and share reminiscences. They bring to life the five years of research in Michigan, Germany, and France, unearthed facts and genealogy, all chronicled in a major new book full of stories, history, and photographs.

Participate in two different presentations:
11:00am - Settlement History with stories from descendants
1:00pm - Digging into Local Genealogy
Both will include ample time for questions and answers.

Visit the Museum with a special exhibit supporting the event, talk to genealogy experts, and meet the author where you can purchase a signed copy of his new book: "Michigan's Thumb, a Paradise for Saxonia Settlers."

Enjoy German music and dance demonstrations. German sausages and special-brewed beer (and soft drinks) will be available for purchase.
