About this Event

The First Five Minutes: Water, Search and Ventilation.

Whether it is the junior firefighter taking a hydrant or a chief officer in command of a greater alarm fire, every firefighter on the fireground makes decisions that effect the outcome of the fire. The decisions firefighters make in the first five minutes of a working fire dictate how the fire will go. A coordinated fire attack is a matter of managing available resources and prioritizing how to attack the fire, search the building and ventilate the smoke and heat. These fireground priorities remain the same regardless of the size of your department. This class uses fire behavior as a foundation to develop a predictability and expectation of fire and smoke travel through a building. We explore the latest fire behavior research using a “science to the streets mentality.” Using that model we determine where to place our interior attack lines, where and how to search the buildings and how and where to ventilate. The class uses scientific fire behavior research, the benefits of flowing water, and the benefits of vertical and horizontal ventilation to develop a systematic and coordinated approach to fire attack. This is an interactive class where participants will be asked to discuss the strategy and tactics they employ on the fireground. This class is a full day in depth lecture that covers all aspects of fire attack, search and ventilation. Participants will walk away with an in depth understanding and predictability of fire behavior during a structure fire.
