Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

My friend George Holz put it this way: "Photographers used to make the magic, now the cameras do". George still shoots at the highest level, both digitally and with film. And he makes magic no matter what the medium. He just sees it from both sides.

Whether in London, New York, or the neighborhoods of Portland there's a growing passion for traditional film photography. It's happening with people new to the medium, with seasoned photographers and with serious artists. And some of the best in the field never fully gave over to digital. But why?

It's a look. Each camera, each lens, each platform, app, medium or process generates it's own unique look. In choosing film, and the cameras that shoot film, you are choosing a particular a look that cannot be replicated. When factoring in film types, pushing/pulling developments, cross processing, larger formats, and darkroom and alternative printing techniques the possibilities expand dramatically. It comes down to a quality of beauty. And it matters.

It's a skill. Our shooting habits change when we are limited to12 to 36 shots per roll. We slow down, look carefully, consider the possibilities and plan our approach. We hunt differently. We can't depend on accidents. We need our skills. Film photography is a great way to challenge and improve.

In this series of 5 classes (Every Wednesday 7-9 pm, October 18 - November 15) we will be diving deep into the beautiful and surprising world of film photography, including:

• How film works: a bit of the science and history

• Cameras and lenses

- small, medium and large format

- show they work

- which to choose and why

• Film choices:

- B&W and color negative, color positive, instant

- when and how to use them

• How to meter and expose, push and pull

• Processes:

- B&W, color, cross processing, solarization

- resources: labs and darkrooms

- how to do it at home

• Scanning and analogue print choices

The classes will take place in the studio where all formats will be demonstrated. We will expose films and send them for processing. There will be assignments.

Note: Although we will be covering how to do basic b&w film processing (how to spool film, chemicals, etc.), this is not a darkroom class. We will not be processing film in the class.

It's real. It's a hands-on process open to surprises and manipulation, allowing you to craft your own unique style and outcome. You can hold it. And it won't disappear should the lights go out.

It's not so expensive. Quality film cameras are inexpensive in comparison to digital cameras, and they never need to updated. As long as film is being sold they are not obsolete.
