What’s wrong with most introductory wine classes? Too much emphasis on the bewildering world of varietals, regions and styles, and not enough on simply engaging with what’s in the glass. In this class, we turn all that around. We’ll put you in touch with the primary components common to all wine, demonstrate what sensory impressions they make and show you how to focus your attention on them—individually and in concert. You'll come away with a heightened awareness of all that wine has to give and some new skills that, with practice, will make you a more confident judge of quality in wine—and your own taste.

Most wine tasting glasses are by the book, but at Milk Street, we prefer to take a fresh approach. Wine expert Stephen Meuse will change your thinking about how to taste and serve wine, what makes a good wine and why it’s time to throw out most of the rules and regulations that make tasting wine a chore instead of a pleasure. You'll learn that rieslings are not always sweet, a simple Beaujolais can stand in for expensive Burgundies, older vines don’t necessarily make better wine and more on the first Thursday of every month.
Stephen Meuse has taught courses in the history of food and wine at Boston University’s graduate program in gastronomy and was longtime wine columnist for The Boston Globe. He regularly talks wine on NPR’s Milk Street Radio with host Christopher Kimball. He can often be spotted stocking shelves and dusting bottles in the wine department of Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge, Massachusetts – though most days he leaves his spots at home.

Please enter 49 India Street into your GPS. The doors to our school are directly across the street. They are the brown double doors with bowties on them.

Should I eat before class?
You will have light snacks in class and multiple tastes of wine. If you would like a substantial dinner, please plan on eating before or after the event.
What is the maximum number of students in class?
Different classes have different student/participant caps. Here are general guidelines for maximum student capacity:
- Hands-on cooking classes: 16
- Cooking demonstrations accommodate: 30
- Milk Street Sessions: 50
- Be Our Guest: 16
- Free monthly tour: 20
- Wine classes: 20
Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
Yes. All students must be 21+ years old.
Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Is my registration/ticket refundable or transferrable?
Yes. Tickets are refundable up to seven days before an event and transferable to another student at any time. Within seven days of the event, we do not offer refunds.
