Description

The fascinating world of molecules (Y9-Y10)
Prof Ramon Vilar, Department of Chemistry, Imperial College

There are just over 110 different types of atoms, yet combining them in different ways we can get an infinite diversity of molecules each with unique properties. Besides molecules found in Nature, we can also synthesise brand new ones and build materials designed to do a wide range of things from the batteries that power our electronic devices to medicines that keep us healthy. In this lecture, we will take a trip across the Periodic Table and illustrate how scientists study molecules that Nature has produced over millions of years as well as how new molecules are made.

If you wish, following the lecture you are welcome to visit campus using our Walking tour guide [PDF] and explore campus by yourself. Please note that this does not allow you access to all areas of campus, as some buildings require swipe card access.

This lecture is aimed at students in Y7-Y9.
