The Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society's 45th Anniversary Celebration featuring Tapping History: Excelsior Amusement Park!
Celebrate the Society's 45th anniversary with a very special Tapping History presentation - Excelsior Amusement Park with Greg Van Gompel, nationally known amusement park historian and author of "Excelsior Amusement Park: Playland of the Twin Cities," soon to be published by History Press.
In September 1924, a nationally-known outdoor amusement industry figure, Mr, Fred W. Pearce, was in Excelsior to look at a piece of real estate offered for lease by the Minneapolis & St. Paul Suburban Railroad Company at the end of its trolley line. He was sizing up if he could make the property work in becoming his next amusement resort. After receiving the blessings of the people of Excelsior, the Excelsior Amusement Park soon followed.
Amusement industry historian Greg Van Gompel will talk about why Excelsior was chosen, who was Fred Pearce, how the park managed to survive both the Great Depression and World War II and what were the reasons that Excelsior Amusement did not survive beyond the 1970s.
The event will be held on Wednesday, May 17 at the Old Log Theatre, 5185 Meadville St, Greenwood, MN and will benefit the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society.
