In the past, you were instructed to write a business plan and try to execute on it. You also made sure you kept your idea secret because you didn’t want anyone to steal it. Today startups coming out of Stamford, Harvard and places like Silicon Valley don’t use business plans when starting and tell everyone what they are working on. Most people are aware of the impact that technology is having but fail to realize that the changing entrepreneurial process has also had a tremendous impact on our world.
Lean Startup by Eric Reis has taken the entrepreneurial world by storm. This methodology draws from other disciplines such as Lean Manufacturing and Agile development then applies this knowledge to the entrepreneurial process. The great thing is that this methodology is not limited to tech startups. It is valuable to more traditional businesses and can even work as a “life” tool.
Other entrepreneurial pioneers such as Steve Blank have helped create resources like the Business Model Canvas. This powerful tool helps an entrepreneur think through the startup process in ways that are similar to a business plan however in a much more efficient manner. It also provides a snapshot visual of the many things that an entrepreneur will have to consider when starting a business.
The entrepreneurial world is evolving and New Jersey has to improve its entrepreneurial IQ if it hopes to keep up or become a leader. My hope is to provide some information that others can spread and use to help their businesses.
Carlos Abad started his first business when he was 14 and has had several businesses as an adult. In 2008, his real-estate investment company failed. After trying a tech startup with a friend he decided to return to the financial industry. Within a few years, he found that most of his clients where entrepreneurs and decided to specialize in working with them. Carlos also founded LaunchNJ which has over 4,000 members and is striving to create a vibrant entrepreneurial community in New Jersey.
