Event Details

This Seminar will be held at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Parish Hall:
315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206

This course will teach participants to consider the ethical implications of integrating a client’s spirituality into their psychotherapy work with the client.  This course will also help clinicians think through how their own spirituality will impact their work with clients.  Clinicians will consider how to respond to client’s spirituality when it is similar and dissimilar to their personal spirituality.  Appropriate self-disclosure will be discussed from an ethical framework.

CE Objectives:
  1. Identify the ethical standards for their respective license as it applies to honoring the spirituality of clients
  2. Relate one way of understanding client spiritual process within the therapeutic setting as it applies across religious perspectives
  3. Articulate their own spiritual history in a way that informs the therapeutic relationship in terms of honoring similarities and differences with clients and appropriately using self-disclosure

Contributing Speakers:

Sean T. Burns M.Div., LCSW
Clinical Director of the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute

In 1995, Sean received a Masters in Divinity from Columbia International University and in 2007 a Masters of Social Work from University of Pittsburgh.  His previous work experience includes eight years in the business world and four years of drug and alcohol treatment at Gateway Rehab.  He joined the PPI team in 2009 and became Clinical Director in 2016.  Sean seeks to help families who are affected by addiction by encouraging them to integrate their faith into their growth.  Upon client request, he enjoys including a Biblical perspective.  Using his broad range of experience, Sean’s goal is to see clients take one practical step at a time in the direction they want to go.

Rachel Kornfield Becker, LCSW
Therapist and Training Program Manager

Rachel studied Sociology and Christian Formation and Ministry at Wheaton College (2007) and Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh (MSW, 2014).  As of 2014, Rachel started practicing soul care at Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute through individual and couples counseling.  Throughout that time, Rachel has considered spiritual integration in her work a priority and continually explored, researched, read and deepened her use of spiritual integration with a diversity of clients.  Rachel believes that every individual is on a journey of healing and spiritual discovery.  She takes joy in joining her clients and seminar participants wherever they find themselves in that process.
