Workshop Description:

What is Equity in Education? Why should it matter?

Rose State College is an open access institution. So we welcome students from all backgrounds and every student has an equal opportunity to be a part of our campus. But equal access does not always mean equal opportunities for success...often times there is not an even playing field once the students arrive.

This session will be hosted in the collaborative space in the office of Academic Innovation. We will share a video presentation that was given by David Dodson during an Achieving The Dream kickoff meeting a few years ago. During the presentation, David will discuss the difference between equity and equality in a community college setting and the importance of advancing equity in community colleges. Throughout the video, various colleges will also discuss some of the unique challenges low-income students and students of color face and how the policies, procedures and practices of a community college can help or hinder these students in their pursuit of a degree or certificate.

The video is 18 minutes in length. We will pause the video periodically to allow time for participants to discuss their experiences or perspectives on the equity challenges we face at Rose State College.

We've allowed 1 hour for the discussion--but conversation may last longer.
