Event description

Description

Have you ever wanted to take a stand, but were afraid of ruining the moment?

Have you wanted to share your feelings, but didn’t because you weren’t sure how they would be received?

Have you known how you needed to show up for a hard conversation, but when it came down to it were derailed?

Do you want to show up as you really are in every interaction?

I’m right there with you.

I’ve found that most of us understand how we want to be in relationship, but without practice it’s hard to turn that vision into reality. In this series we’ll go beyond a cognitive understanding of empathy, understanding, and relating, and get down and dirty with practice. That way, when we arrive at the moments that matter, we’ll be prepared.

Empathy is the physiological process and learned skill at the base of all human relationships. Modern neuroscience shows us that most of the work of relating happens below our conscious awareness. When we engage with another person our emotional brain activates our entire body. Under stress this looks like an increased heart rate, tensed muscles, and shallow breathing. And, here’s the kicker, in that state we cannot access higher brain function. We literally, physiologically, cannot shift our behavior by thinking when we're stressed.

Enter embodied practice. When working with emotions, change starts with the body. Because emotions primarily happen at the subconscious level, working with breath, attention, and the body is the fastest way to shift ingrained patterns, beliefs, and behaviors.

When we learn to feel our bodies, we can shift out of "fight, flight, freeze", and cultivate deep listening. We can start listening to what's really being said and respond skillfully.

Don’t be fooled, we can’t learn empathy sitting down, alone, reading how to articles or even ravenously taking notes while listening to a lecture. Learning empathy is like learning to ride a bike - it’s physical.

In this series, I invite us to feel our bodies, connect with those around us, and (ta-dah!) ***practice***.

It's crazy to think how many times we've had to practice multiplication tables, and how few times we've had the space to practice connecting with others. What if you had a low stakes environment to practice starting hard conversations, giving feedback, listening, and sharing honest feelings? I bet it would be life changing.

This 4 session course kicks off The Empathy Series. You can expect to leave with an embodied understanding of empathy, an outline of its neurological underpinnings, a few new friends, and pragmatic tools for practice.
