Event description
This workshop is about making a deeper, more authentic connection, then learning to express that connection through photography.

About this Event

This is not about making pretty pictures or postcard-like records of one’s travels. This workshop is about making a deeper, more authentic connection, then learning to express that connection through photography. We visit local parks and urban areas which can be used to transform an emotional experience into a visual one.

This workshop will be about making, not taking, photographs by nourishing a deepening in our heart/soul/self and then bringing that awareness into our photo making process. We will work on giving our photos deeper layers of meaning to make stronger, more powerful images.

Inspiration will be sparked by a balance of conversation, readings, poetry, photographic exercises, walking meditations, writing exercises, photo examples, portfolio reviews, instructor presentations, and by our fellow participants. Daily field trips with photographic assignments and exercises will be a big part of this experience, with individual attention given. Fun, laughter, and introspection are to be expected. The majority of our days will be spent outside making photographs.

This is sure to be a transformational experience that leads you to make more powerful and emotionally impactful photographs.

Douglas Beasley’s personal vision explores the spiritual and emotional aspects of people and place and is concerned with how the sacred is recognized and expressed in everyday life.

After receiving a BFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, he worked for several prominent commercial photo studios as a photo assistant and darkroom slave. Both helped him develop a appreciation for attention to detail and technical proficiency but left him longing for artistic self-expression. He then opened his own studio in Minneapolis, MN emphasizing commercial and editorial fashion. As a strong feminist, he considers himself the world’s most unlikely fashion photographer but greatly enjoyed the creativity and spontaneity of fashion photography. This evolved into shooting extensively throughout the country and internationally for various advertising, educational, public service and non-profit clients. Doug currently works on fine-art based commercial projects around the world.
