Event description
A 60-minute guided tour through the Eide historic arboretum.

About this event

A 60-minute guided tour through the Eide historic arboretum exploring the geologic history of Florida and how it relates to the evolution of plant life using living examples. Dr. Oliver Mitchell Sr., the grandfather to Elling O. Eide, purchased this land in 1935 and over the years the Mitchell and Eide families planted interesting plants from around the globe. Aside from the arboretum, the Eide site contains seven historically significant structures, and a modern library.

This tour is guided by docent Norman Burr, who has a diverse and eclectic background including advanced degrees in geology and geophysics from Cal Tech University. Norman worked as a docent for 20+ years at two Santa Barbara botanical gardens and also taught botany courses at the community college.

Most recently, Norman volunteered at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C., and was a docent in human origins, paleobotany, and meteorites.

Please wear comfortable shoes for walking in the grassy areas off the path and consider a hat, sunblock, and a water bottle.

**THE ELLING EIDE CENTER IS A PRIVATE, GATED RESEARCH FACILITY. GATES WILL OPEN AT 8:30 AM AND CLOSE AT 9:00 AM ON TOUR DAYS.

*The Centers for Disease Control Covid-19 recommendations will be followed. This tour takes place outdoors and masks are optional while outdoors. A brief indoor tour of the Eide Research Library will be available, masks will be required for those who choose to participate.
