The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Therapy:
A Lecture and Clinical Workshop
Jonathan Shedler, PhD
Jonathan Shedler, Ph.D. Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry
University of Colorado School of Medicine
Psychodynamic therapy is an evidence-based treatment. In the morning lecture--based on the internationally acclaimed article, The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy--Dr. Shedler will describe the seven core features of contemporary psychodynamic psychotherapy in clear, jargon-free language.
Dr. Shedler will discuss scientific evidence for the benefits of psychodynamic therapy and how it compares to other evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy and antidepressant medication. Dr. Shedler will also describe how the “active ingredients” of all effective psychotherapies draw on (often unacknowledged) psychodynamic principles, such as enhancing self-knowledge, recognizing problematic relationship patterns, and addressing problematic patterns in the “here and now” of the therapy relationship.
The remainder of the day will have a practical, hands-on clinical focus, building on concepts from the morning lecture. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of contemporary psychodynamic therapy through clinical case presentations by workshop participants, with case discussion, live clinical supervision, and role playing to demostrate clinical interventions. Dr. Shedler will emplasize the role of clinical case formulation as a "road map" to effective psychodynamic treatment.
Jonathan Shedler, Ph.D. is known internationally as a psychologist, consultant, researcher and author. His article The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy won worldwide acclaim for firmly establishing psychodynamic therapy as an evidence-based treatment. Dr. Shedler lectures and leads workshops for professional audiences across the globe, consults on psychological issues to U.S. and international government agencies, and provides expert clinical consultation by teleconference to mental health professionals worldwide. Dr. Shedler is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
