Our Edible Landscape Symposium - Plan to come one or both days!

Two-day symposium featuring presentations on Friday, the 16th, by our very own Walker County Master Gardeners! Topics include Vegetable Gardenting; Composting/Vermiculture; Landscaping with Herbs; and Seed Harvesting! Meals on your own Friday. (See Agenda Schedule information below for both days)

The second day (Saturday, February 17th) will feature four exciting guest speakers to include: John Hart Asher, Judy Barrett, Scooter Langley and one more Texas gardening expert to-be-announced. (See below for additional speaker information). Lunch will be provided with snacks throughout the day. There will also be vendors, raffles, doorprizes and a silent auction.

Enjoy visiting historic Huntsville with lots of shopping, museums and great local dining.

Attend one or both days by pre-registering through the link below ($20 for Friday & $60 for Saturday). Registration check-in on both Friday and Saturday will begin at 8:30 am at 455 State Highway 75 North, Huntsville, Texas 77320 (Veterans Complex). The program on Friday begins at 10 am and at 9:30 am on Saturday.

*You may also purchase tickets at the door for either event as space allows.

NOTE: This Garden Tours and Symposium was originally scheduled for September 8th and 9th, however, Hurricane Harvey had other plans and it was postponed until February. The Friday Garden Tours could not be rescheduled due to the winter season. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. Please stay tuned as we are currently planning an upcoming garden tour event later this year when plants are blooming with color and everyone will be ready for some outdoor activity!


John Hart Asher has been an environmental designer with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and a lecturer for The University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture since 2009. Asher hold a bachelor’s of history from the Univeristy of Mississippi and a master’s in landscape architecture from The University of Texas. His research interests include green roof design, riparian restoration, soil restoration/conservation practices, compost for restoration. He has a pocket prairie in his backyard that he enjoys each day with his wife , Bonnie, and their son Adler.

Judy Barrett is the author of several gardening books including Her book: What Can I Do With My Herbs? was published by Texas A&M Press in the spring of 2009. What Makes Heirloom Plants So Great? 2010. Recipes From and For The Garden 2012. YES! You Can Grow Roses 2013. Her newest book: Easy Edibles: How to grow and enjoy fresh food, came out in the fall of 2015. A new book is in the works.

Scooter Langley was born and raised in Huntsville. He has been teaching Horticulture for almost 10 years for Lee College. The Lee College Horticulture Program was named Therapeutic Garden of the year in 2016 by the National Garden Beau. He was the President for the Walker County Farmers Market for 3 years; and is also a member of the Texas Master Naturalist Heartwood Chapter and the Director of Research for the Lake Livingston Friends of Reservoir Water Willow Project.
