About this Event

This talk presents some highlights on the early history of nuclear forensics from the speaker’s point of view. This recounting may be useful for understanding the difficulty in getting something new started at a national level. The more important goal, though, is to attempt to glean lessons from the past that should be valuable for guiding the future development of a national and international capability in nuclear forensics. The talk will primarily focus on the time period from 1991 to 2007 (when the speaker retired), but it will also touch on a few recent key developments.

Sidney Niemeyer served in various scientific leadership roles at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), prior to retiring in 2007. During his tenure at LLNL he served as Division Leader for Analytical and Nuclear Chemistry and as Special Assistant to the Associate Director for Nonproliferation, Arms Control, and International Security. For more than a decade he was a leader in the international development of nuclear forensics as a new discipline. He chaired an International Conference on Nuclear Smuggling Forensic Analysis in 1995, which lead to the formation of the Nuclear Forensics International Technical Working Group (ITWG), and he co-chaired the ITWG for its first twelve years. For the first three years of DHS he served as a detailee for RadNuc Forensics. In this role he served as Thrust Area Leader for RN Forensics and Attribution, and as the POC with the interagency to develop a national capability for nuclear and radiological attribution. He was also a Scientific Advisor to the National Technical Nuclear Forensics Center (NTNFC) during its initial year of operation.
