About this Event

John Lantos, MD

Dr. John Lantos is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri at Kansas City and Director of the Children’s Mercy Hospital Bioethics Center. After his residency at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in DC, he served two years in the Public Health Service in rural West Virginia and then took a fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics at The University of Chicago. He taught at Chicago for twenty years.

He has served as president of both the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics and the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities. He is on the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Bioethics. He is an Associate Editor of three journals - Pediatrics, American Journal of Bioethics, and Perspectives in Biology and Medicine.

He writes about ethical issues in clinical care, in research, and in public policy. He has written two books about ethical issues in neonatology and has a forthcoming book on the rise of fetal medicine.

In the policy arena, he served on President Clinton’s Health Reform Task Force and advised the President Bush’s Council on Bioethics about ethical issues in research.

He is currently Co-Investigator of an NHGRI-funded U19 Center Grant to study clinical and ethical issues in whole genome sequencing of newborns.
