The 2017 Devil's Isle Challenge is a week-long paddling event in the heart of the Atlantic featuring the world's longest ocean SUP race course. This is our second year and it's gonna be big. Two weeks after the Carolina Cup, Bermuda is just a short hop 700 miles east. Come out and test yourself in the most beautiful waters in the world and with some of the best athletes the Atlantic has ever seen.
The race course is open to displacement hull SUPs, prone paddleboards, surfskis, and outrigger canoes. Paddlers challenge the 40-mile course solo or on a relay team. For some this will be an opportunity to truly test their skill and strength, but for others this will be the adventure of a lifetime. And it’s all for a good cause - Raising awareness about the plastic pollution that's choking our oceans and raising funds for SUP'r Kids Bermuda, a free paddling program aimed at cultivating the next generation of ocean warriors!
1. How do we get our gear to the island?
The best way is via ocean freight. We will have containers leaving Port Elizabeth (The port, not the town), New Jersey and Fernandina, Florida one week prior to the race. Pack up your vessel, get it to the port on time, and then the rest is on us. That's right, completely free. You'll arrive in Bermuda to find your board waiting patiently for you and for the adventure of a lifetime. Currently, the NJ Container is a 20', but for you surfski and OCs the FL container is 40'.
If we garner enough interest up north in the surfski/OC category, we can switch to a 40' container, so please let us know!!!
2. I'm thinking about signing up for a relay, but can't see the prices without creating a team first! What the deal?
First, we apologize for this inconvenience. Eventbrite operates this feature in an unfortunate way. Have no fear though! The prices are here:
-SUP OPEN Relay (Teams of 2-8): $100 per paddler
-SUP GROM/JUNIOR OPEN Relay (Teams of 2-8): $50 per paddler
-PRONE OPEN Relay (Teams of 2-8): $100 per paddler
-SURFSKI OPEN Relay (Teams of 2): $100 per paddler
-OC1 OPEN Relay (Teams of 2): $100 per paddler
3. Will there be live tracking? How about media coverage?
There will be live tracking for every racer that is accessible by anyone in the world. We also hope to have live video coverage.
4. How do we hire a support boat?
Remember, chartering your own support boat is not necessary, but it is recommended. Those swapping out via beaches will experience some down time in being transported back to the event site.
Bermuda is a treacherous island with tons of mushroom head reef that run bare on the infamous south shore. Thus, support boats must be driven by an experienced captain. For this reason, we are compiling a list of appropriate charters for the race and can relay this information to teams that wish to have their own support boat. Most charters will be fishing boats.

5. What does PRO vs OPEN mean?
All PRO categories (SUP only) are limited to 14' and under with no movable rudder system.
All OPEN categories (SUP, SURFSKI, OC) are unlimited. (SUP) Rudders allowed. (ALL) No motors or sails.
PRO tickets include admittance to the Welcome Party on Thursday, May 4th.
PRO tickets are included in the prize purse breakdown and OPEN are not. The exception to this rule is:
- SUP OPEN Solo race is included
For a full prize purse breakdown see below. Non-cash prizes will still be given to all categories not included in the breakdown. Good Prizes. Like your weight in Rum...or something like that.
6. Do I have to fundraise?
We ask every paddler to raise $500. All fundraising will go directly to our free paddling program, SUP'r Kids Bermuda, and to our ocean cleanup efforts on the island.
Upon registering, you will be taken to Crowdrise to start your fundraising page, in the event you leave this page before creating your fundraiser, instructions to do so are in your confirmation email. It is a requirement of all racers to establish a Crowdrise fundraiser page, but it is not a requirement to actually raise the suggested $500.

8. What's your refund policy?
There are no refunds given for race, camping, or Sunday Brunch tickets, but we do give refunds for accidental Welcome Party tickets (Remember all PRO race tickets include the Welcome Party!) and as well for SUP rentals if you let us know at least 1 week prior to race day.
