Description

A Better Jamaica is pleased to present The Delightful Festival: African Delights, Asian Delights, Caribbean Delights, and Latinx Delights. Join us as we salute Jamaica's vibrant immigrant population by presenting a series of FREE evenings of ethnic music, food and film.

Caribbean (Trinidadian) Delights

7:00 pm to 8:00 pm - Delightful Music - Lima Calbio
8:00 pm to 10:00 pm - Delightful Cinema - "Play The Devil"

Delightful Music: A living legend in Trinidad, Lima Calbio is known throughout the Caribbean for her vocal versatility, musical mastery and her command over the audience, having them at her beck and call. As a solo artist and member of such iconic bands as Blue Ventures and Byron Lee & the Dragonaires, she has traveled the world over Perfoming calypso, soca, ragga, reggae, dancehall, zouk and more. In 2012 Lima migrated to the US where she continues to perform as a solo artist while constantly expanding her repertoire to include R&B, pop, jazz and even rock.

Delightful Cinema: "Play The Devil" - Set against the backdrop of Trinidad and Tobago's mystical Carnival, a gifted and struggling young man becomes the object of intrigue for an older, well-meaning businessman until their worlds collide. Maria Govan is a self-taught filmmaker from the island of New Providence in the Bahamas. After working on sets in Hollywood, she returned home and began making small guerilla-style local documentaries, including “Junkanoo: The Heartbeat of a People,” “Where I’m From: HIV and AIDs in the Bahamas,” and “A Man with a Voice: The Life of Norman Solomon,” to name a few. In 2004, she moved to New York and began writing her first narrative film, “Rain”, which premiered at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival and won numerous awards internationally. numerous awards internationally.
