Event description

Description

Rural Australia is weathering momentous social and environmental challenges, according to journalist and author, Gabrielle Chan. She will be speaking at a ‘meet the author’ event where she’ll discuss her new book, Rusted Off (Vintage 2018). The event is hosted by Charles Sturt University - Three Rivers University Department of Rural Health (UDRH).

Gabrielle’s book combines insights gleaned through her work as a journalist with the Guardian Australia and as long-time resident of Harden-Murrumburrah, and elegantly interweaves these perspectives with stories from the everyday lives of rural people.

Exploring a host of issues, including economic and demographic transitions, Indigenous recognition and reconciliation and the effects of social and cultural fragmentation, Gabrielle argues against ‘one size fits all’ solutions.

Rural towns are similar but different to metropolitan settlements and education, health, social welfare policies focusing on rural settings must engage with their diversity and complexity. Among other things, finding sustainable solutions to longstanding and emerging issues confronting rural Australia requires acknowledging the meaningfulness of place, reinvigorating democratic processes and supporting local community leadership.

Come along to hear Gabrielle unpack and explore these issues and then join us for further conversations over drinks and canapes. Copies of her book will be available for purchase. The conversation will be facilitated by Professor Deborah Warr of Three Rivers UDRH.
