Description

Michigan Inspirations is a community of Reggio-inspired learners eager to collaborate with other early childhood program administrators, teachers, students, parents and community members who are interested in furthering their knowledge and understanding of innovative, authentic early childhood practices and philosophies.

The focus of Michigan Inspiration’s 2016 – 2017 Seminar Series is "Early Childhood Education as Activism: Social Justice, Global Engagement and Stewardship".

We are very excited to welcome Deborah Meier, as our speaker to present on Social Justice; the specific topic being "The Crisis of Democracy and the Role of Schools".

Deborah Meier is currently senior scholar at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education. She has spent more than four decades working in public education as a teacher, principal, writer, advocate, and ranks among the most acclaimed leaders of the school reform movement in the U.S. She started her work as an early childhood teacher in Chicago after graduating from the U of Chicago. She has always been a proponent of active, project-based learning.

She is the author of many books and articles, including The Power of Their Ideas: Lessons to America from a Small School in Harlem and In Schools We Trust.

She is an outspoken critic of state-mandated curriculum and high stakes standardized testing and has written extensively on their unreliability and class/race biases.

With the current uncertainty in the direction of education in our country, as educators we need to be energized, empowered, and activated now more than ever.

Having had the opportunity to hear Deb speak a few years back and walking away optimistic, energized, and focused I feel that this is one seminar that should not be missed!

Come ready to be inspired!
