Dr. Andrew Torget, historian of nineteenth century North America at the University of North Texas

Dr. Andrew J. Torget will talk about one of the most crucial – but forgotten – moments of the civil rights era: the Crisis at Mansfield High School in 1956-57. Thanks to historical records preserved and digitized by the Portal to Texas History, that story has recently been rediscovered and is the centerpiece of a new online museum about the civil rights era in Texas. Dr. Torget will tell the story of Mansfield, and how the Portal to Texas History is allowing students across Texas to rediscover forgotten stories of the past.

The Portal to Texas History is a gateway to rare, historical, and primary source materials from or about Texas. Created and maintained by the University of North Texas Libraries, the Portal leverages the power of hundreds of content partners across the state to provide a vibrant, growing collection of resources.
