Description

THE GENERAL SOCIETY ARTISAN LECTURE SERIES

Spring 2018

The Craft and History of Golf

Tim Alpaugh, Artisan

Tuesday, February 26th AT THE GENERAL SOCIETY LIBRARY

The lecture starts at 6:30 P.M. – RECEPTION TO FOLLOW

For the last decade, artisan Tim Alpaugh, has been restoring hickory shafted golf clubs from the early 1900’s; these historic clubs, all pre-1935, are fashioned from hickory and persimmon wood. During this time, Mr. Alpaugh has restored nearly 1,000 clubs, sent to him from all over the United States. Through his artistry and craftsmanship, he has been able to restore each club to look, not only, as pristine as it did in the 1920’s, but also to ensure it plays as well now, as it did then.

In addition, he has fashioned a series of unique and beautiful pitch mark repair tools, also known as divot tools, which have been used by professional golfers, and have been provided to prestigious golf courses and three U.S. Presidents. During Mr. Alpaugh’s presentation he will discuss his methodology of restoration and illustrate how he handcrafts the divot tools. He will also outline the fascinating history of golf. The roots of today's game can traced back to fifteenth century Scotland.

Tim Alpaughis a carpenter and artisan, as well as being the author of the historical fiction novel, Claret Dreams. He specializes in creating handcrafted divot tools, trestle sticks for golf bags and hickory club restoration. He is a student of both golf history and golf architecture. More information on his work can be found at www.instagram.com/claretdreamer.
