'The Costumes of Jane Austen's World: From Clueless to Bridgerton' Webinar
Overview
Jane Austen is arguably one of the most influential authors of the 19th century; after all, her views on love and relationships continue to be a delicious subject for Hollywood ever since the invention of film. What makes her work so timeless, however, is not only its adaptability, but also the gorgeous costumes that accompany her stories. What is it about these costumes — be it period or modern — that have made her adaptations a visual feast? And what work goes on behind-the-scenes to make them ready for the big screen? With the help of a professional costume designer, it's time to uncover the world of fashion surrounding Jane Austen like never before.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the world of costume design surrounding Jane Austen, with a special focus on Regency era pieces worn during her lifetime and their portrayal in modern TV and film adaptations.
Led by esteemed costume designer and fashion historian Jolene Marie Richardson, our fashion-forward virtual experience will include:
- A brief introduction to Jane Austen, from details surrounding her personal life to the books she wrote
- An overview of the clothing and fashion trends during the Regency era
- Comparing and discussing adaptations of several of her works that have been replicated over various decades, including Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility
- Behind-the-scenes details on how a costume designer researches and designs historic clothing for period shows
- The influence of the period's fashion trends on newer shows, from Jane Austen adaptations like Clueless to inspirations such as Bridgerton
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Jolene — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
