New York-based independent book conservator and bookbinder Jeffrey S. Peachey will detail the conservation treatment of the Hesburgh Libraries’ important copy of Dante’s La Commedia (Venice: Vindelinus de Spira, 1477) in this profusely illustrated lecture. He will describe its deteriorated and damaged 20th century binding structure, along with the considerations and decisions that lead to its resewing and rebinding.

Peachey will highlight the differences between historic 15th century binding practices and modern conservation binding techniques and explore the sometimes problematic differences between historic and modern materials. He will conclude his lecture with an overview of aesthetic considerations for conservation rebinding. Bibliophiles, conservators, librarians, Italian scholars, and anyone curious about the physical structure of books will find this lecture of interest.
