Event description

Description

This 2 hour workshop is tailored specifically towards dental professionals e.g. dentists, assistants, hygienists, front staff, technicians. You will learn practical knowledge, tools, and postures to be able to incorporate into your personal life and workflow. This will help reduce burnout, stress, and common physical injuries. You don’t need to have any experience in yoga or be flexible to do this workshop (flexibility is a practice, if you don’t use it you will lose it). As long as you are capable of breathing and moving, then this workshop is for you!

The first hour will entail a one hour slow and gentle yoga sequence that can be incorporated into your schedule before or after work to improve flexibility, alignment of the body, reduce pain, and promote relaxation. The second hour will focus on specific tools and techniques to incorporate into dental work flow during breaks that leaves you feeling less fatigued, stressed, and stiff at the end of the work day.

WARNING: may induce feelings of relaxation, rejuvenation, and smiling at the end of this workshop :)

HOW DO YOGA AND DENTISTRY RELATE?

As a practicing dentist in Geraldton, Ontario, Diana understands first hand the physical and mental demand and exhaustion in the dental field.

You are operating micro power tools hunched over or contorted within a field of millimetres within a living, moving, wet dark cave with limited visibility… sometimes belonging to a child who cannot sit still or an anxious patient who is nervously twitching. I am sure you all have your stories.

Eventually after years, poor posture and lack of body maintenance practices may result in illness in our joints, bones, nerves, and muscles such as sciatica, herniated disc, pinched nerve, osteoarthritis, tendonitis. Many dental professionals have to take time off work or end their career early due to physical ailments mostly musculoskeletal focused (e.g. neck, shoulder, back, hip, wrist, and hand issues) and mental burnout (e.g. fatigue, feeling overwhelmed and overworked, stressed).

This has led to more dentistal professionals seeking out preventative services such as massage and physiotherapy, which are effective tools, but insufficient alone. Similarly, we tell our patients that regular professional dental cleanings are effective, but insufficient alone. It needs to be combined with regular brushing and flossing for optimal oral health. For optimal musculoskeletal health, a regular movement practice is needed. It should be focused on re-alignment of the spine and bone structure, increasing range of motion of joints, and building strength (e.g. stabilizing muscles, ligaments, tendons) of the musculoskeletal system, all of which are embodied in the practice of yoga.

DETAILS OF WORKSHOP

Part 1: Home Practice

A one hour yoga flow that can be practiced at home connecting deep breathing with mindful movement focused on the neck, shoulder, back, wrists, and hips. We will explore accessible poses in depth so people can feel the proper alignment and engagement of each posture, which is extremely important for beginners. This is facilitated by detailed descriptions, props (e.g. chairs, walls, blocks, straps), relevant theories and analogies, and hands-on adjustments to guide people safely and effectively into the pose. We will spend time breaking down specific poses and addressing any questions and challenges that come up.

Part 2: Work Practice

  • Intricate and technical breakdown of the correct alignment in standing and sitting positions: As dental professionals, we sit most of the day, with some periods of standing. Over time, with improper sitting and standing postures, this leads to misalignment of the body (e.g. rounded shoulders, hunched or kinked spine, and uneven hips). Using the foundational principles of yoga, you will learn how to engage and extend certain areas of the body and the intricate technicalities for proper sitting and standing postures.

  • How to integrate movement practices into workflow: Learn how to utilize periodic work breaks (e.g. patient cancellations, lunch, between patients) to dedicate this time for body maintenance. We will go over how to use furniture already in the office (e.g. chair, desk, wall) to assist and guide proper alignment of the body during stretching. Let’s develop a new relationship with desks and chairs, one that aids the body in stretching rather than in degeneration.

  • Learn how to remain calm and collected in times of stress (e.g. challenging procedures, working with anxious patients) using specific breathing exercises: In times of stress, we are in a state of “fight and flight” as the breath quickens and shallows, the heart rate increases, and perspiration happens. By slowing down and deepening our breathing, we are able to shift from “fight and flight” to “rest and digest” states. By shifting ourselves towards a more calm state, we can perform better, make optimal decisions for patients, and bring anxious patients to a state of ease. We will go over two types of breathing techniques to help facilitate this process within ourselves, as well as for anxious patients.

Limited to 20 spots so please reserve your spot early. Once you have registered, please email Diana Liu at zentist.ca@gmail.com for confirmation of your attendance, your name, if you have previous experience of yoga, and if there are any previous injuries or limitations for safety in the practice and customization of the workshop.
