Event Details

Overview of the Coming of Age Workshop

This workshop, by the Family Youth Institute and sponsored by the Noor Islamic Cultural Center, is intended to help parents and youth  best navigate through the period of puberty. Attendees will gain an understanding and recognize the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty. Participants will discuss how to best navigate this period to allow for positive growth and development of the young person and the family through interactive activities.

PART 1

Parents of MS & HS Session Mandatory Session | Friday, August 25th 7pm – 10pm

Notes: No children allowed in this session. We encourage both parents, but at least one MUST attend this session for son/daughter to attend corresponding session the following day.

Description: Parents will be provided with an overview of the workshop presented to both boys and girls, ideas on how to expand the conversation at home, and offered useful resources for further understanding. Parents will be given the opportunity to role-play anticipated questions/conversations with their children, and will brainstorm ideas to initiate a “rite of passage” connection activity to do at home with their child. 

PART 2

Middle School Boys & Girls Sessions  | Saturday, August 26th 10am – noon

Notes: This session is for middle school students ONLY (enrolled in 6th, 7th or 8th grade). Middle Schoolers whose parents have registered AND attended the parents session on Saturday evening will be granted permission to sit in on the workshop. 

Description: The boys and girls sessions will be held separately at the same time, led by same gendered facilitator. Students will participate in an interactive discussion that will include: understanding and recognizing the physical and emotional changes that come with puberty, anatomy and function of the reproductive system, personal hygiene (taharah included), positive body image, dress code, healthy relationships, and spirituality. References to the Sirah and Islamic fiqh/understanding are intertwined in each of these categories. During the workshop participants will engage in hands on activity/crafts to help them communicate their developmental changes with their parents. 

High School Boys & Girls Sessions Saturday, August 26th 3pm - 5pm

Instructor Biographies

 

Sr. Duaa Haggag, MA, LLPC, holds a Masters in Counseling and works in private practice as a child, adolescent, and family therapist at Silent Sunlight Counseling. Her counseling experience includes working with youth and their families in both the school and clinical setting. She has extensive experience and training in group therapy for adolescents and play therapy for children. Her research interests include child and family development, attachment parenting, and parent education. She has presented psycho-educational workshops on youth development and parenting at the local and national levels. She has actively worked with Muslim youth and families through the Muslim American Society (MAS). 

 

Br. Nadeem Siddiqi, Ph.D. is a Board member of the Family & Youth Institute (FYI). He holds a PhD in Finance and is currently a Consumer Risk Manager at JPMorgan Chase. He is trained as a marriage educator, presented parenting workshops, and has worked extensively with Muslim youth, primarily through the Muslim American Society (MAS) and Muslim Students’ Association (MSA). He has been extensively involved in community activism at both the local and national levels for about 20 years, in both Canada and the United States. He has a wide array of interests and serves on the board of several non-profits, including serving as the current Chairman of the Muslim American Society (MAS)
