About this event

While Greenwich Village's role in the gay liberation movement is best known for the Stonewall riots in 1969 and first Gay Pride parade a year later, the Village's LGBT+ history actually stretches back more than a century before. It's time to uncover the rich history and legacy of one New York neighborhood at the center of the sexuality and gender revolution.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore 150 years of LGBT+ history in the New York neighborhood of Greenwich Village, from gay activist residents to iconic brick-and-mortar locations that still stand today.

Led by Dr. Andrew Lear, world-renowned expert on LGBT+ history and NYC tour guide, our virtual journey into this fascinating and eclectic neighborhood and its LGTBT+ roots will include:

  • Why the Village became America’s first bohemian neighborhood and then its first "gayborhood"
  • Famous residents of the Village's LGBT+ community, including Oscar Wilde, James Baldwin, and Eleanor Roosevelt
  • Places where the early gay right movement took place, from the bar where the 1966 ‘Sip In’ happened to the block where the first Pride marchers gathered
  • Historic theaters and bars where great LGBT+ performers have acted and sung
  • A discussion of the key events that took place before, during, and after the Stonewall uprising
  • Key places in the rise of New York’s lesbian and trans communities
  • How Greenwich Village is honoring its rich gay history in modern times through monuments and memorials

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A session with Andrew — any and all questions about Greenwich Village and its LGBT+ history are welcomed and encouraged!

Can't make it live? Don't worry, you'll have access to the full replay for one week!

See you there, virtually!

About Andrew

Professor Andrew Lear combines a love of travel with a passion for gay history.

Professor Lear holds a B.A. from Harvard and a Ph.D. from UCLA. He has published a widely praised book on male-male love in ancient Greek art, as well as a number of important scholarly articles in this area. Indeed he is generally considered one of the foremost experts on same-sex love in the ancient world, but his interest in gay history extends to other key periods, such as fin-de-siècle England, Renaissance Italy, and medieval Japan.

A beloved teacher at Harvard, Columbia and NYU, Professor Lear won the Harvard Certificate for Excellence in Teaching four times. He has taught a wide variety of courses in Classics, history, art history, and gender studies—as well as Italian and French language classes.

Professor Lear is also working with author/actor Stephen Fry to develop a podcast on the 'Scandals and Secrets of London's National Portrait Gallery.'
