Event description

Description

Managing bills, your credit, savings, spending, budgeting etc., it’s all a part of our everyday lives. But what do we really know about credit in the African American community? Be prepared for a major myth about bad credit to be analyzed and debunked once and for all. The Minneapolis Urban League, in collaboration with the African American Financial Capability Initiative Community of Practice (AAFCI) (comprised of Hope United CDC, Minneapolis Urban League, NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center and Summit Academy OIC), is hosting an event just for you! We are introducing our employees/affiliate leaders and broader community to an understanding of a common myth that originated from racial discrimination in lending and continues to be perpetuated internally among and around the African American community. The event will also highlight the chronology of significant historical/cultural events in America and its impact on the African American community.

Our guest speakers will be Dr. Mahmoud El-Kati and Dr. Samuel L. Myers, Jr.

Attendees will walk away with:

  • An understanding of how culture, history, and the concept of race have impacted financial security in the African American community

  • Knowledge about systematic barriers and policies that have hindered movement up the economic and wealth-building ladder.

  • An understanding of how various factors influence behaviors, attitudes and decision-making when it comes to money.

  • An opportunity to connect and expand their networks with partner organization Community of Practice staff, affiliates and other community members.

  • Some real tips and strategies around what they can do to increase financial security individually and at the community level.

  • Eye-opening research that debunks a long-time myth in the African American community.
