Event description
Historian Carmela Spinelli explores the origins of this mysterious color in garments and how black "has it all"

About this event

Replete with meanings and messages the color black has been donned by princes and priests, rebels and renegades, artists and intellectuals for centuries. Black, ubiquitous in fashion today, has a long history as the color of choice.

Join historian Carmela Spinelli for an exploration of the origins of this mysterious color in garments and how black, as Coco Chanel said, “... has it all.”

Spinelli is an international fashion and decorative arts historian with over twenty years of experience in both education and industry, currently representing Savannah College of Art and Design globally for special projects and programs. She has received the Lisa Taylor Fellowship from the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum for academic achievement and a Historic Preservation Award from Historic Savannah Foundation in 2016.

Fashion in a shade of black is highly encouraged!

This is an in-person event. Your health and safety are our top priorities and we are following all CDC and New York City guidance. All guests must have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Proof of vaccine (CDC card or photo, Excelsior Pass, CLEAR Health Pass, or other digital record) as well as a photo ID will be required. Masks are also required.
