Event description

Description

Show business has never seen a group quite like The Coasters who occupy a special niche in the music field. And the Tar River Orchestra and Chorus League is excited to announce they will be hosting The Coasters live in Rocky Mount on Friday, February 10, 2017 at Nash Community College’s Brown Auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $60 per person and include heavy hors d’oeuvres and cash bar. Order tickets online at tarriverlive.com or reserve seats and tables by calling 252-200-4157.

The Coasters have had a long unbroken string of hits all containing humorous materials. In this respect, they are certainly unique. Their first hit “Down in Mexico” released in the spring of 1956 sold approximately 500,000 copies. In 1957 they hit the chart with a double-sided smash “Young Blood and “Searchin,” each selling a million copies.

In 1958 the band again hit the chart with two blockbuster hits, “Yakety Yak” and “Charlie Brown” which stayed on the Billboard top ten list for several weeks taking the number one and number two positions. From then on it was hit after hit for The Coasters whose many albums earned them Gold Records.

All of The Coasters materials were written and produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who also wrote for many other artists. The partnership between The Coasters, Leiber and Stoller was an instant success.

The original Coasters who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 were Carl Gardner, Billy Guy, Will Jones and Cornell Gunter all of whom are now deceased.

The Coasters now consist of four very talented vocalists, Joe Lance Williams (tenor/baritone,) 2001 to present who performed live on stage with Carl Gardner up until his retirement in 2005, Primotivo Candelaria (first tenor) 2008 to present and Eddie Whitfield (Bass) 2009 to present. These four, along with Veta Gardner, are carrying on the legacy of The Original Coasters. These members were personally handpicked by Carl Gardner for their talent and strong musical background history. Dennis Anderson -2011 to present (second tenor) came into the group following the death of Carl Gardner. Additionally, The Coasters recently hired guitarist Ray Sabatello. As the band’s new musical director, Sabatello was one of the musicians on The Broadway Cast “Smokey Joe’s Café.”
