Event description

Description

Please join us for a dynamic, innovative training offered for free to the Minnesota community!

The Clover Model helps educators and youth workers understand the social and emotional needs and capacities of their youth. The Model is used in schools and OST programs nationwide. Its simplicity helps youth-serving professionals understand the depth and complexity of their students' inner lives. This vibrant training will prepare participants to use the model in their work, to understand SEL and to design effective social-emotional strategies for the young people they work with.

The session will also introduce participants to the Holistic Student Assessment (HSA). The HSA is a self-report survey that assesses the social-emotional development of young people and provides programs with SEL data from a strengths-based, culturally responsive lens. Attendees will learn how to use the HSA to support youth and improve programs.

FAQs:

Who should attend from my organization? - This session is perfect for executive directors, program directors or frontline staff. School-day educators are also encouraged to attend. The content will be designed to include all voices and speak to all perspectives.

Do I have to attend both days? - The training is designed to cover both days. However, if the second day is not doable, paritcipants are still encouraged to attend for Monday only. Tuesday will build on Monday's learning, however, so attendees will not benefit from attending Tuesday only.

How many people can attend? - We hope that you can send multiple people from your organization so you can learn together. The cap for the training itself is 35 people.

What will the training be like? - Clover trainings are dynamic, fun, and engaging. You will not be in your seat for very long without engaging in an activity; there is very little lecture. Mixed in with content about social-emotional development, we use videos, games, and reflective activities to help you process and apply the learning. We are all youth workers and run these trainings with a spirit of creativity, laughter, and teamwork. The content itself is applicable and practical, while still based in research.

Who is The PEAR Institute? - We're a group of teachers, youth workers, social workers, psychologists, and researchers out of McLean Hospital in Massachusetts. We've studied social-emotional learning from a developmental lens for many years, testing our framework and tools in schools and OST programs all around the country. We seek to bridge research and practice, bringing innovative, useful services to our partners and learning from them in turn.

Why is this free? - PEAR ran a three-year cohort with a group of OST programs and schools in the Twin Cities from 2015-2018. That group built a deep capacity for using Clover and the HSA in their work. They want to ensure that the community using these tools in Minnesota is always vibrant and growing. Some graduates from that cohort are helping us conduct this training for you.
