Event description

Description

Join the Chicago South Side Film Festival and the Chinese American Museum of Chicago for our joint screening of “The Chinese Exclusion Act”.

“The Chinese Exclusion Act” is a documentary film Produced by Ric Burns and Li-Shen Yu that explores the history and contemporary relevance of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act – the only federal legislation ever to single out a specific race and nationality for exclusion from immigration and citizenship. The film explores connections between the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act and the history of American civil liberties, legislation, labor movements, and culture. It shines a light on the forgotten history of Chinese American resilience and resistance to oppression including educational segregation, forced registration, and mass lynchings. The film is 1 hour and 54 minutes long.

After the film, Producers Ric Burns and Li-Shen Yu will answer audience questions via Skype.

Light refreshments will be served.
