Event description

Description

The Chelsea Symphony presents Sibelius' Second Symphony for its first concert series in the new year. Of the symphony, the composer said, "my second symphony is a confession of the soul." Premiered in 1902, this symphony was composed during the first of two periods of oppression known as the "Russification of Finland." During a time when a series of provisions were implemented designed to suppress any sense of Finnish cultural identity, this work was the first major composition following his triumphant Finlandia. Though the extent of patriotic intent of this Second Symphony is debated, it nevertheless solidified the composer's position as a national hero.

Also on this concert series are TCS featured soloists: flautist Kim Lewis performs the Frank Martin Ballade and Beatrice Naumann is featured on Bach's Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Minor on Friday's concert. Both performances open with a world premiere by TCS composer-in-residence Aaron Dai.

Concerts will be held at St. Paul's German Lutheran Church, 315 West 22nd Street
