Event description

Description

The Charleston Forum was created in the wake of the 2015 massacre at Mother Emanuel A.M.E Church, to perpetuate the passion for unity and progress our community, State, and Nation demonstrated in response to the horrific crimes and the leadership of the victims’ families. That experience exposed the need for candid discussion on issues of race. For the discussion to be of most value, the participants must have different backgrounds and different perspectives. The Forum provides that discussion, and more.

We press our participants to share not only their perspectives on what is a problem, but also their ideas of what is a solution. Our live audience and online followers move forward with a common understanding or appreciation of issues we face as a community and ways our community can address those problems. The impact of The Charleston Forum, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, has not been limited to the events we’ve hosted; it extends to the culture we’re helping to create around discussions of race. Our participants and community partners continue to engage in the work of community building and honest exchange after our events end, creating a ripple effect throughout the community.

This year we want to provide the community a direct path to action on issues the Forum has addressed. We are asking our elected officials to take a few minutes to share what they are working on in one of the subject areas where the Forum has been vocal and active. We'd also encourage our speakers to provide HOW they plan to make to a difference and HOW these interested community members can help bring the effort to fruition.
