Description

The Changing Face of the Opioid Epidemic with Dr. Dan Ciccarone & local panel discussion

The opioid epidemic has been called the defining public health crisis of our time. It is estimated that 64,000 died of opioid overdoses in 2016 in the United States – more than died in the Vietnam War. The epidemic continues to accelerate nationally and Marin County is mounting a strong local response. By learning about this complex issue together we will be even better equipped to protect ourselves and our community.

Dr. Dan Ciccarone, UCSF School of Medicine, is a national expert in opioid use disorder. He will describe the shifting nature of the opioid epidemic, from prescription drug abuse toward increasing illicit opioids such as heroin and fentanyl. His research includes hundreds of interviews with people addicted to opioids, and relates these findings to the social and economic forces shaping the epidemic.

After Dr. Ciccarone's presentation, a local panel will discuss trends in Marin County and local strategies to address the opioid crisis, including opioid addiction treatment and efforts to prevent overdoses. This event is sponsored by Dominican University of California, Marin Health & Human Services, and RxSafe Marin.
