Event Details

Please join us for a private screening of CNN's Black in America IV and a panel discussion around diversity in technology.

CNN followed NewMe's, an accelerator for minority led startups, inagural class this past summer in Silicon Valley. This screening party will not only preview Black in America IV but will feature a Q&A time with the NewMe particpants and also a panel of experienced Silicon Valley Black Entrepeneurs.

NewMe Founders: Angela Benton and Wayne Sutton

Angela Benton

Presently Angela is the CEO of Black Web Media, which publishes BlackWeb20.com the leading online publication for African-Americans interested in Technology and New Media. She also Founded and Chairs’ the New Media Entrepreneurship Conference & Accelerator, who’s goal is to steer the Internet economy to be more diverse and inclusive.

She is one of Fast Company Magazine’s Most Influential Women in Technology for 2010 and one of Ebony Magazine’s Power 150 for 2010. She is also the youngest Hall of Fame inductee of Minority Media and Telecommunications Council and a 2010 Woman of Power honoree by the National Urban League.

Chris Bennett is the co-founder and CEO of Central.ly, a web based product for small businesses to reach more customers through an easy to create, beautiful website and their social media tools. He is passionate about social change, innovation, and the Internet. He has a background founding businesses from an early age and his last startup, LiquidBooks, was a success on the University of Pennsylvania campus. In his free time, he loves to travel, swap stories, and explore San Francisco. Chris holds a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

CEO and Founder of Aisle Finder and participant in NewMe accelerator. Curtiss Pope has developed an API that provides access to supermarket aisle info from Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Safeway, CostCo and Wal-Mart in the U.S. and plan to provide additional data for stores in Canada and Europe soon.
Currently, the API offers descriptions, photos, categories and aisle numbers for over 150,000 grocery items.

Pius Uzamere and Becky Cruze

Pius Uzamere is an entrepreneur, engineer, and co-founder of BeCouply, the mobile app that helps couples have epic social lives. Pius graduated from MIT where he was student body president and earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering.

 

Becky Cruze is the co-founder of BeCouply, the mobile app that helps couples have epic social lives. Becky graduated summa cum laude from The George Washington University where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Communication

Chikodi Chima

 
Chikodi Chima is a staff writer at VentureBeat, covering early stage startups, investing, cleantech and online communities. After receiving his M.S. from the Columbia Journalism School, he spent two months in Brazil researching the startup environment in São Paulo, for a project called TechTrotter. For seven months he lived in Bangalore, India, as one of the organizers of the TEDIndia conference. He's also worked with more early-stage companies than you've had hot dinners.

Kwasi is the CEO of FIGHTER Interactive, and Kwasi ENT, and a partner in Voting Works LLC and Internet Securities INC. FIGHTER Interactive, builds celebrity/brand driven games and applications for the Facebook,iPhone,Android, and iPad, Kwasi ENT executes New Media & Television marketing / publicity campaigns for artists & brands. Voting Works creates and executes celebrity-driven campaign strategies for various political organizations and individuals.Internet Securities is a tech focused investment bank.

Kwasi began his career as an Investment Banker at Citigroup's' Salomon Smith Barney after graduating from The University of Pennsylvania with a degree in International Politics.

Prosper

Prosper was born and raised in Nigeria. He migrated to the US at 15 in search of the American Dream. After attending  Christopher Columbus High School, a New York City public high school, he was recruited to attend Williams College under a scholarship.

He graduated from Williams and teamed up with some college friends to tinker around. After tinkering for about 3 years, Peanut Labs was born. Peanut Labs is the leader in monetizing social networks and social games. Their monetization platform powers surveys on Facebook, IMVU, EA Pogo, and other notable web properties, delivering millions of virtual currency transactions daily. As CTO and Co-founder, Prosper's main job function was to build and scale the technology platform behind Peanut Labs, while managing the day-to-day roller-coaster of building a startup.

Peanut Labs was sold to E-rewards, Inc, a quarter billion dollar company and the world-wide leader in online data collection. Prosper is still employed at Peanut Labs/E-rewards and is focused on building innovative products that will continue to drive growth for the E-rewards.

 

Chad Womack

Chad Womack is a scientist and bio-entrepreneur interested in developing new technologies that will transform delivery of vaccines and immune-enhancing biologics. He has started bio-tech companies is also a co-founder of America 21.

America 21 is an open, collaborative and innovative online and offline effort that fosters solutions-based approaches to 21st century community economic development.
