The Call Not to Look Away
Topic for the February 24 session of the "Torah for Everyone" series
It can be hard to look suffering "in the face," and tempting to turn away. What does Judaism have to say about our encounters with another, whether a family member or a stranger, whom we feel drawn to ignore or even hurt?
We will explore this crucial question by looking at one of the most disturbing stories in the Torah, in which Abraham comes close to killing his son Isaac. God ordered Abraham to ignore his son's personhood and pain, yet we can see this story as a compelling message that Judaism calls us never to act this way.
Join us to consider these issues in an open environment led by Rabbi Bridget Wynne.
When you register you'll receive material to read, so please sign up ahead of time.
No experience is necessary, and all are welcome.
About the Series
Are you curious about what's actually in the Torah, and whether it might be meaningful to you? While the Torah is the core text of Jewish tradition, it can appear intimidating, irrelevant, boring, or even offensive.
Yet looked at from a sophisticated, adult perspective, rather than the literal understanding or children’s stories we may have experienced, the Torah and commentaries on it can be a rich source of wisdom for grappling with today’s real-life issues: ethics, family, work, politics, money, happiness …
Join us to explore the Torah, plus relevant commentaries, in this twice-monthly class led by Rabbi Bridget Wynne in an open environment. Each session focuses on a specific portion of the text and relevant issues it brings up.
No prior experience or knowledge of Hebrew is required.
WHEN: We meet twice monthly on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, 7:00-9:00pm, October-June, with some exceptions due to holidays. The schedule is below.
