Digital Stitches TX Presents: The Business of Fashion Workshop

Do you have a fashion business or want to start one? Join Digital Stitches TX for a workshop on the Business of Fashion. Learn directly from industry experts about everything from business to public relations & marketing to sourcing, retail and investment.

Session 1: Business

Speaker: Josephine Firat, Firat Group LLC, Faculty Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses

Josephine Firat is an entrepreneur who owns multiple fashion, education, and business consulting businesses and has been in the industry for over 10 years. She has worked with, taught, and advised over 700 small business owners all over the country on the topics of start-ups, growth, marketing, opportunity, financial management, international business, operations, and leadership.

Firat is a faculty in the areas of entrepreneurship,business, international business, and marketing. She is a faculty member for the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses at Babson College near Boston, where she works with entrepreneurs nationally and internationally to grow their already successful businesses. Firat holds an MBA in Marketing and Finance and a second Masters degree in International Business, both from the University of St. Thomas in Houston.

Speaker: Merin Guthrie, CEO of KIT

Merin Guthrie is the founder and CEO of KIT, an innovative, Houston-based clothing company that is solving the problem of ill-fitting clothing. With a background in nonprofit consulting, fashion, and the arts, Guthrie spends her days ensuring that every part of her business reflects KIT’s philosophy of empowering women, all the while running an efficient business that is competing beautifully in a highly competitive market, recently featured in the Wall Street Journal as the “antidote to vanity sizing.”

Martha Mtegha and Patricia Dunn have 20 years combined experience in the fashion industry and hold Degrees in Fashion Design. They are the owners of Digital Stitches TX an apparel production and fashion consulting company based in Houston Texas. With the fashion industry on the rise in Houston, more and more designers are choosing to stay and start their businesses yet resources for production are still a huge challenge, and that's why they decided to fill the void and open Digital Stitches TX. Martha and Patricia also teach Fashion Design at Houston Community College.

Session 4: Retail

Speaker: David Peck, Miles David

David Peck studied fashion design at Ecole Parsons à Paris, earning top honors as Designer of the Year for his thesis collection. David's work continued in New York before moving to Houston in 2010. He is the creative director of Miles David where each garment is skillfully hand crafted and created in the Miles David factory in Houston, TX. David's designs give elegance a delightful spin through collaborations with artists and textiles sourced from around the globe. Exuberant color, playful textures, and artistic prints are infused in each of his designs, many of which are limited editions. David's work has been featured on the cover of Women's Wear Daily and in publications such as Teen Vogue, Lucky, Marie Claire, InStyle, and People Style Watch as well as popular television shows Hart of Dixie and E! News.

Session 5: PR & Marketing

Ashley Small’s proven PR and digital marketing strategies have helped brands grow their visibility, amplify their voice and expand their reach.

A Google AdWords certified specialist, Ashley’s been recognized by Fast Company Magazine, Business Insider and has recently presented at the U.S Capital, sharing best practices on digital marketing and Goldman Sach’s 10,000 Small Businesses program. She serves with several nonprofit organizations including Girls Inc., Women Empowering Nations, Lemonade Day Houston, Black Girls Code and the I'm Me Foundation. Through her work in the community, she has educated and trained more than 400 girls and budding entrepreneurs in the areas of technology, social media and leadership development.

Session 6: Finding Investors

Speaker: Larry Lawyer, President and CEO of Triton Investments

Larry Lawyer is the President and CEO of Triton Investments. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Management Information Sciences at Southern Methodist University. He also attended the European School of Business Administration and received his MBA. He first began working with JPMorgan Chase in the 1990s, where he mainly focused on acquisitions from PE firms. In the last 5 years he created 3 start-up companies and an A&D firm. He also took charge of 15 storage acquisitions and divestitures, MPLs, E&Ps, pipeline companies, and power plant acquisitions.
