Description

Getting ready

  • For your safety, you are required to wear sturdy closed-toe, closed-heel shoes, such as athletic shoes or boots.
  • Please bring glasses if needed for reading.
  • Dress comfortably in clothes that might get dirty. Since some of the jobs require bending, make sure your clothes provide adequate coverage.
  • In colder weather, dress in layers. In hot weather, knee length shorts are acceptable.
  • Leave personal belongings at home or securely out of sight in your car. There is no storage for personal items available in the warehouse.
  • Do not bring food or drink to the warehouse due to food safety requirements. We provide water for our volunteers to drink in designated areas.
  • Volunteers age 16 and 17 must have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian in order to volunteer without being accompanied by a responsible adult. Download the form here: https://gcfb.volunteerhub.com/go/u/50d.
Volunteers age 10 - 16 MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Volunteers under age 10 are not permitted at distribution center shifts.
  • Volunteer work may involve standing, bending and lifting. If you will require any special accommodations, please email your Gleaners volunteer coordinator: krogensues@gcfb.org.

Getting here

  • We need all volunteers working the entire shift to ensure the work assigned is completed. Orientation begins promptly at 9 a.m. (morning shift) or 1 p.m. (afternoon shift). Arrive at least ten minutes early to allow time to check in.
  • Parking is free in our lot directly across the street from our building. For your safety, follow the parking instructions of our security personnel.
  • Enter the building through the door marked with the “Volunteer Entrance” sandwich board sign.
  • Upon arrival, check in at one of the computers just inside the entrance. If you are volunteering with a group, use the computer designated for your group.

What to expect

  • Gleaners distribution centers process a tremendous volume of donated and purchased food to serve our hungry neighbors in need. Volunteer projects include sorting and packing food, picking cases for shipments, preparing supplies for food drives and more. Projects are scheduled as required to meet needs.
  • Your experience will begin with a short required orientation and safety presentation. If you would like a tour of the facility, let the volunteer coordinator know when you arrive.
  • Group photographs will be taken at the beginning of the shift with those members who are present.
  • If you have food allergies, you are advised to exercise caution when determining whether or not to participate in warehouse activities.

Cancellation

Your work is essential to ensuring food is ready for distribution. If you will be unable to attend, be sure to follow the link above to cancel or reschedule your shift as soon as possible. If a volunteer space is not filled, some of our hungry neighbors will not receive the food they need.

Inclement weather

You may call 313 923 3535 to hear a recorded message if the distribution center closes due to inclement weather.

Community service forms

You will receive a thank-you email following your volunteer shift containing your name, event date, and time. This may be used as confirmation of your service.

Thank you again for volunteering with Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan. We look forward to working with you!
