The Breadfruit Revolution: Micronesian Culture and Science

Professional Development workshop for Hawaii educators and community

Monday October 29 and Tuesday October 30, 2018

8:30 am to 3:30 pm both days

Participants will:

  1. Gain a richer perspective of Micronesian cultures;
  2. Make connections with Micronesian cultures to home culture through games, songs, food preparation and handicraft making; and
  3. Practice science and geo-literacy with geography, oceanology, linguistic comparisons, and cartography.

Day 1

Sense of Place: The Pacific - the Large Ocean that unites us.

Stories, songs, mapping, and games.

Cooking Micronesian food.


Day 2

Understanding clans, household and family structures, and chieftainship.

Adapting to our new home - Micronesian culture in Hawaii.

Handicraft making.


PREL professional staff from the Marshall Islands, Pohnpei, and Chuuk will be conducting the activities.


Ticket price includes:

Micronesian snacks for both days

Simple soup and salad lunch for both days

Materials to make at least 2 handicrafts.
