The Botany of Fire with Terry Huang

Many native plant species are able to come back following a fire, including shrubs and trees known as crown resprouters. Seeds of many native plant species are fire-responsive, meaning that they only "wake up" and sprout after a burn. In fact, some of our most spectacular wild flowers are endemic fire followers, which means that they only occur in the post-fire landscape, waiting quietly as seeds in the soil for years to reappear in massive numbers after a burn!

Terry Huang is your friendly neighborhood botanist and garden coach. From helpful tips to encouragement, he loves finding creative ways to make botanical science and gardening knowledge fun and accessible. With an integrated background of botanical and horticultural experience, Terry is ready to share this knowledge and send you off on your gardening journey.

Terry holds a BS in Plant Biology from the University of Washington and a MSc in Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Plants from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. He works at the South Coast Botanic Garden as the Director of Living Collections, Learning and Engagement.

*Please note that class participants are asked to park on the street, Wheatland, Tuxford or Ledge, and if able to, walk up the driveway to the nursery.

This class will be held outdoors. Please come prepared with sun protection and water.
