The Bookshelf Project is brought to you by the Black Child Development Institute-DC Metropolitan (BCDI-DC Metro) in collaboration with the National Black Child Development Institutes (NBCDI), Read to Succeed Initiative. The intent is to create and cultivate in-home libraries for children from Birth to 5th grade for the purposes of fostering an early love for books, reading, and life-long learning.

The Bookshelf Project serves as a FREE book distribution mechanism designed to get more culturally relevant books in the hands and homes of children of color. In addition to receiving free books, each household will also get a FREE bookshelf.

The Bookshelf Project was launched and introduced to the community through a series of summer literacy events:

Pancakes Authors & Books: On July 16th we kicked-off our free book giveaway in partnership with IHOP located in Ward 8 on Alabama Avenue from 11:00am-2:00pm.

Happy Nappy Storytelling Time: On July 23rd we continued our free book giveaway in partnership with Sankofa Video Books & Café on Georgia Avenue across from Howard University.

Happy Nappy Storytelling Time: On July 30th we continued our free book giveaway in partnership with Sankofa Video Books & Café on Georgia Avenue across from Howard University.

Our last summer series free book distribution August 12th was a huge success given the 200 plus free books that we gave away; as well as the 60 plus families that we registered for The Bookshelf Project. The event success was attributed to our collaboration with Ward 8 Councilman Trayon White and his annual back to school Backpack and School Supply Drive.

If you registered for The Bookshelf Project at any of the above events you are eligible for our free bookshelf distribution. To redeem your free bookshelf you will need to attend our "Putting Reading First" literacy workshop. Our kick-off workshop will be Saturday, December 2, 2017; from 1:00pm-4:00pm. However, if you are not able to attend our first workshop, you may pick another workshop date. Please obtain your FREE ticket through this Eventbrite link. Lunch and snack will be served. CHILDREN ARE WELCOME (Two adults per household and two children per household due to space capacity).
