“The little soul roams among these landscapes,

disappears, returns, draws near, moves away,

evasive and a stranger to itself,

now sure, now uncertain of its own existence,

whereas the body is and is and is…” — Wisława Szymborska

Join us for a generative workshop in which we take a close look at that part of ourselves that always is: the body. Our bodies can be a source of pain, pleasure, joy, agony, celebration, and so much more—which makes the body a worthy subject for poetry. In this workshop, we’ll examine the myriad ways the body might be explored in verse. What does the body invite us to consider? How do we celebrate, talk to or back at, or even contest the body? What does the body have to “say,” and what does poetry in particular offer us as a form to meditate on these issues?

During this intensive, we will look at poems by Ross Gay, Ilya Kaminsky, and Sharon Olds, among others. We will also write poems about the body, and study closely the ways we might use poetry as a means to portray the body as both a source of grief and gratitude. And finally, we will leave the workshop with bold drafts of new poems.
