Event description

Description

Thanks to support from Unite Students, MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) is excited to present four guided walks exploring the neighbourhood around the Boar's Head, an a Shakespearean-era inn-turned-playhouse.

Recent excavations by MOLA ahead of construction of new student housing by Unite Students have revealed remains of the 16th century inn, which was converted into a playhouse in 1598 and was well known for putting on raucous comedies.

Join us to find out how the Boar's Head fits within the prominent theatre culture of the Whitechapel and Shoreditch areas. Discover more about the inns and playhouses of Shakespearean-era London, and learn about comedian Will Kempe (who graced the Boar's Head's stage), theatre opponent Stephen Gosson, and the London they inhabited.

The walking tour will follow a 3km route, stopping at key locations near the Boar's Head site and running for a total of 90 minutes. The walking tour will start at Aldgate East Station and finish at St Leonard’s Church. There are four tours to choose from:

  • Saturday 2nd November: 12.30-14.00 or 15.00-16.30
  • Saturday 23rd November: 10.30-12.00 or 14.00-15.30

Please note that visitors must be aged 16 or over. This event is not recommend for people who have mobility restrictions that will inhibit them from undertaking a 3km walking tour across uneven surfaces.

On Thursday 7th November 2019 we will also be hosting a public lecture at St George’s Lutheran Church in Whitechapel, to share some of the excavation results so far. The talk will be given by MOLA archaeologist Heather Knight, who is leading the dig. Tickets are available here.

This site is being developed by Unite Students, with RPS Group acting as consultants, and work being monitored by Historic England. Look out for updates on the progress of the dig on the Unite blog and Twitter, and the MOLA blog and Twitter.
