Celebrating Black History Month, Deering Estate Alumna Artist-in-Residence Michelle Grant-Murray will host the “The Black Artist Talk,” a forum bringing black arts and culture to the forefront in our community. The afternoon will feature a special viewing of the documentary film “The Richmond Heights 49ers” by Jessica Garrett Modkins and performance by choreographer Ashley Beckno. A guided tour of the Deering Estate historic site and homes will be included with featured exhibit BlackFlorida: Perrine by Johanne Rahaman. The event will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2018 from 1:00pm – 4:00pm at the Deering Estate Visitor Center Theatre.

The event is free and open to the public, welcoming all community members, artists, and arts enthusiasts. R.S.V.P. is preferred at stryky@miamidade.gov or by calling 305-235-1668 ext. 238 as seating is limited. Please note that regular admission fees apply to those not attending the event by 1:30 pm.

About the Film:
“The Richmond Heights 49ers” is based on the book, Images of America: Miami’s Richmond Heights by co-authors Patricia Harper Garrett and The Historic Society’s Founder & Executive Director, Jessica Garrett Modkins. The documentary features intimate conversations with the community’s pioneering residents and details the 1949 decision of the white developer, Captain Frank C. Martin, to build a self-sufficient community for Black World War II veterans.

About the Black Artist Talk:
Created by Michelle Grant-Murray, the ‘Black Artist Talk’ is a series of conversations where artists of the South Florida African Diaspora community come together to generate ideas and discuss strategies for presenting works, seeking resources, and creating sustainability. Its primary aim is to utilize the power of the Arts to synthesize and nurture cultural understanding. Michelle Grant-Murray has presented ‘The Black Artist Talk’ Series at multiple locations including the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, Deering Estate, NOVA Southeastern University, the Dillard Museum, the Baily Museum, and Miami Dade College in South Florida over the past three with presenting artists of diverse backgrounds and multidisciplinary practices that range from Africana Studies and Storytelling to Visual Art, Movement.

This iteration of the ‘Black Artist Talk’ features Moderator- Michelle Grant-Murray, Alumna Choreographic Artist-in-Residence at the Deering Estate and Founder and Artistic Director, of Olujimi Dance Theatre and MDC Jubilation Dance Ensemble; Documentary filmmaker, Jessica Garrett Modkins – Founder & Executive Director of The Historic Society, and Founder of Hip Rock Star, a trailblazing, award winning, advertising, marketing, and communications agency focused on socially conscious brands; and Ashley Beckno, Choreographer and MFA Candidate at Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Florida.
