Join industry leaders and academic researchers on April 3 at Temple University’s Fox School of Business to explore the local biopharma innovation ecosystem, focusing on the inter-firm collaboration in divided R&D market: entrepreneurial startups’ research innovation vs. Big Pharma’s drug commercialization.

AGENDA

4:00-4:30 p.m. Registration and networking

4:30-6:00 p.m. The Biopharma Innovation Ecosystem: Opportunities and Challenges

6:00-7:00 p.m. Reception

The biopharmaceutical industry requires intense research and strategic R&D investments to generate new drugs and therapies. Advancements in biotechnology—from new research tools, such as immunoassay, gene sequencing and high-throughput screening, to new therapies, such as monoclonal antibodies and stem cells—have rapidly changed the industry. With the increasing complexity associated with the development of new drugs, big biopharmaceutical firms have started to rely even further on the industry ecosystem, including intense knowledge sourcing activities, such alliances, licensing and acquisitions.

This “division of R&D labor” led to large biopharmaceutical companies specializing in the development and commercialization of new drugs, basing their work on the research innovation undertaken by smaller firms. This symbiotic ecosystem—comprised of Big Pharma and small entrepreneurial firms—means that the players in this industry tend to rely on each other’s R&D efforts in an orchestrated manner. This puts great emphasis on firms’ capacity to collaborate within their ecosystem and subsequently to integrate external knowledge.

This symposium will uncover the innovation dynamics, as well as the opportunities and threats faced by the biopharmaceutical firms located in the Philadelphia area, by examining the way that inter-firm collaborations take place in such an ecosystem.
